New Mexico authorities have reported the death of key Zimbabwean opposition leader, Roy Bennett, and four others in a helicopter crash.
The State Police spokesperson, Lt. Elizabeth Armijo, confirmed Bennett’s death on Thursday.
The confirmation comes a day after a helicopter carrying Roy Bennett and five others went down in Raton, about 175 miles northeast of Albuquerque.
Speaking on the crash, the Federal Aviation Administration spokesman, Lynn Lunsford, revealed that the crashed helicopter was a Huey UH-1.
Spokesman for the MDC-T opposition party in Zimbabwe, Obert Gutu, also confirmed the loss of Bennett, a white man who spoke fluent Shona and drew the wrath of former President Robert Mugabe.
Gutu further revealed that Bennett’s wife, Heather, also died in the crash.
