US Government: IPOB is not a terrorist group, Nigerian government should address marginalizationThe Government of the United States of America has finally declared its position in the separatist movement of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) who are seeking an independent nation from troubled West African country, Nigeria.

Although the US Embassy in Nigeria says it would prefer a united Nigeria, the US Government bluntly resisted the alleged proscription of IPOB as a “terrorist” group by the Nigerian Army who were accused of torturing and killing of IPOB members when a graphic video circulated on social media on 14 September.

Russell Brooks, spokesman of the American Embassy in Nigeria, told Punch Newspapers on Sunday September 24,

“The United States Government is strongly committed to Nigeria’s unity. Important political and economic issues affecting the Nigerian people, such as the allocation of resources, are worthwhile topics for respectful debate in a democracy.

“Within the context of unity, we encourage all Nigerians to support a de-escalation of tensions and peaceful resolution of grievances. The Indigenous People of Biafra is not a terrorist organisation under US law.”
