Governor Willie Obiano on Wednesday commissioned 50 “smart” patrol motorbikes for use by Anambra State policemen.
According to a press release by the state government,
The Smart Motorbikes which will be manned by well-trained and fully kitted Policemen, possess communication gadgets to connect with Sand Bag Units and Bay Stations at strategic spots.
The Motorbikes Unit is a new innovation aimed to complement the efforts of other special units including the Sand Bag, Metro, Marine and Smartcar Units.
Governor Obiano also during the event inaugurated an Armoured Personnel Carrier, APC, donated to the state Police Command by the Inspector General of Police, Mr Ibrahim Idris.
Inaugurating the Motorbikes, Governor Obiano said Motorbikes Unit is a Special Operation designed to comb areas where vehicles may not be able to reach as well as check phones and wallet snatching in the state.
He revealed that the fifty motorbikes are for the first phase while the second phase will be next year, adding that the target is two hundred motorbikes across the state.
The governor charged the Policemen manning the motorbikes to do things differently this time and to show commitment towards the new task especially during the yuletide, warning that his government will not tolerate any form of extortion of Ndi Anambra.
Responding on behalf of the IGP, Mr Idris, the State Commissioner of Police, Mr Sam Okaula thanked Governor Obiano for the gesture which he noted, has demonstrated his commitment towards issues of security in the State and said the donation will go a long way in strengthening their resolve to root out criminals from the state.
