Governor Udom Emmanuel was one of the lucky escapees of the Reigners Bible Church, Uyo, Akwa Ibom State tragedy where the church building collapsed during the installation of the church pastor, Akan Weeks, as a “Bishop” on Saturday 10 December 2016.
Not much has been revealed on how the Oyo State governor made it alive until now. Governor’s Emmanuel’s security detail known as Ernest Idem was said to have pushed him out of harm’s way as the uncompleted church structure caved way during the service. Idem eventually lost his life as an iron beam from the collapsing roof struck him to death instantly.
Speaking on the incident, Evangelist Ubong Mboho, an eyewitness to the event, explained to Somtoo Okoye blog,
“He (the governor’s aide) was standing close to the governor. I saw him push the governor away from danger when the building started falling.
“My focus was how I could save those who were still alive.”
“The iron pillar had fallen on his (Ekpenyongs’) leg. I had to rush to our bus for hydraulic jack which I used in lifting the iron before we could pull his leg out.
“He was in great pains and was screaming ‘My leg! My leg! My leg!’ while we were making effort to rescue him.”
