The kidnap and death of Fr. John Adeyi back in June shocked social media. The Catholic priest was taken away from his parish and killed even after a ransom of N1.7m has been paid to the abductors.
Benue State Police Command on Wednesday 21 September 2016 paraded the suspected assailants who confessed to carrying out the deed namely Suleiman Gin (30 years old), Saidu Abdullahi (28), Aliyu Garba (26) and Haruna Idi (27). Abdullahi said he was the person who shot Fr. Adeyi to death.
One of the gang members, Suleiman Gin, narrated:
“He did not do anything to us, and I think his death was destined. We killed him after collecting ransom from his family because vigilante and villagers were closing in on us, so we killed him.
“We collected the ransom and hid it in the bush in one of the villages instead of saving it in the bank. We don’t have anything else to say than to say sorry to the man’s family, and plead that the government have mercy on us.”
Police PRO Don Awunah confirming the incident said the gang members were arrested in Bauchi, Benue and Enugu States following a tip-off.
