Birthday cake revealed as cause of fire incident that killed 13 in France today

Earlier today, we reported how 13 youngsters aged between 18 and 25 lost their lives during a club birthday party in a Normandy, France (read here). The cause of the fire breakout has been revealed by French authorities.

Firefighters said that the fire which broke out around 1AM began when the celebrant’s birthday cake – along with the candles and sparkles – fell on the floor, setting the carpet ablaze and circling party goers in fumes of blazes in a matter of seconds.

“A large number of those who died were killed by the fire, others were overcome by the toxic fumes,” a police statement said.
