Ambode Okays 25 Years Jail Term As Punishment For Domestic Violence

The Lagos State Governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode has on Monday okayed the proposed 25 years jail term for rapists and perpetrators of all forms of domestic violence in the state.

Coming on the heels of the recent cases of domestic violence in the state and across the country, the Lagos State governor noted that the time has come to effect aggressive measures in forestalling the menace.

Ambode in support of the move also led a symbolic walk against Domestic and Sexual Violence in Alausa, Ikeja, adding that the walk is aimed at sensitizing people against all forms of domestic abuse.

The state governor noted that all hands should be on deck to ensure that the rights of every citizen, even the most vulnerable of all is safeguarded.

“Rape should not be met with light sentencing; the minimum sentence of 25 years is highly recommended.

“We need new laws, which will respond adequately to the nature and occurrences of this era. Domestic Violence is a crime, and should be treated as such.”
