22-time Grand Slam champion Serena Williams (United States) who thrashed Elina Svitolina of Ukraine 6-1, 6-1 on her way to winning the French Open earlier this year, was handed a shock exit in the Olympics by the Ukrainian on Tuesday 9 August 2016.
Svitolina defeated Williams, a multiple-time gold medalist and defending champion of the Women’s Tennis event, 6-4, 6-3 to advance to the next stage of the competition.
Speaking shortly after her Olympic exit, Serena Williams said:
“Obviously, I’m disappointed, but she played really well and I think the better player today won,” Williams said in a heavily raspy voice.
“But I can’t wait for next time, and I know next time is going to be a really good match and I look forward to it.”
“Itwas a great opportunity. It didn’t work out the way I wanted it to. But at least I was able to make it to Rio. That was one of my goals.”
