The Police in Kano says that 8 Shi’a muslims were killed when members of the religious group held a walk/rally in Kano State on Monday. Although peaceful, sources say policemen teargassed the annual religious rally held by Shi’a faithfuls leading to a violent brawl between the religious crowd and police.
According to the Kano State commissioner for Police,Rabiu Yusuf,
“At about 8am on Monday, thousands of Shi’ites denied other motorists and other road users free access to Kano-Kaduna expressway between Kwanar Dawaki and Tamburawa village in Dawaki Kudi local government area.
‘The Shi’ites also attacked innocent citizens, damaged police and personal property thereby causing mayhem which led to general disturbance of public peace in the state. We lost a officer while another sustained injury. Eight Shi’ite members were confirmed dead.”
