Former DR Congo VP Jean-Pierre Bemba bags 18-year prison sentence for war crimes

On Tuesday 21st June 2016, former vice president of Democratic Republic of Congo Jean-Pierre Bemba Gombo has been found guilty of war crimes and sent to jail for 18 years by justice Sylvia Steiner of the International Criminal Court (ICC).

Between October 2002 and March 2003, Bemba’s Congolese Liberation Movement (MLC) private Army was sent to dislodge then president Ange-Felix Patasse in a coup. The soldiers were said to have ran amok, raping, stealing from and killing innocent civilians.
