Last week, the sight of a “blood river” in the Russian city of Norilsk bemused social media users as pictures went viral. River Daldikhan suddenly turned red and some people went as far as suggesting that the end of time has come.

However, Norilsk Nickel, the world’s largest nickel producer, said in a statement that the company’s activities are to be blamed for the red color of the River Daldikhan .

It said:

“On the 5th of September after abnormal heavy rain, the overflow of one of the dikes occurred, and water entered Daldykan River…[causing] short-term river color staining with iron salts.”
